How It Works

An overview of the Monday Americano Series format and the Smart Pairing system.

Format rotationThe Monday Americano Series alternates weekly between the Single Americano and Team Americano formats.

EligibilityPlayers must complete at least one Single Americano before they are eligible to participate in a Team Americano.

Smart PairingTeam Americano pairings are generated automatically, using players' Overall ranking ratings to balance the four teams as evenly as possible.

Continuous rebalancingEach Team Americano result adjusts both partners' Overall rating, so Smart Pairing produces different team combinations over time, even among the same group of players.

🎯

Single rating unaffectedTeam Americano results affect only the Overall rating used for pairing. Single rankings are calculated exclusively from Single Americano results.

This structure is designed to keep tournaments competitive and enjoyable, support player development, and ensure regular variety in pairings and opponents.

What makes it go up, and what makes it go down.

Win and it goes up, lose and it goes down. That is the whole idea. Everything below is about how far it moves.

What makes it move

Who you beat matters more than how often

Beat a strong pair and you gain a lot. Beat a weaker one and you gain a little - you were supposed to win.

Losing to a strong pair costs almost nothing. Losing to a weaker one costs more.

The score counts, not just the win. A narrow 17:15 is not the same as 32:0.

Newcomers and guests

Someone we do not know yet changes little

After one evening we hardly know how good you are, so those games move everyone else only slightly. Nobody gets pulled down by a stand-in.

Play a few evenings and your number settles. Stay away a while and it becomes uncertain again, so your comeback counts a bit more.

Until you have played two tournaments your number is marked as not yet reliable.

Single and team are two separate numbers. In a team event you keep the same partner all evening, so a good or bad partner never evens out. Comparing the two would not be fair, so they are kept apart. Semifinals and finals are not counted into the rating either - they are played to a set, not to points, and would not fit the same scale. They still decide the placement.

The table is worked out fresh every time you open this page, straight from the recorded matches. So if an old result gets corrected, the ranking corrects itself. Do not read too much into the size of the number on its own - what it means is the gap to the players around you.
